Europe weekend outlook: high pressure rebuilds in the west as unsettled weather retreats southeast

A broad weather reset is taking shape across Europe ahead of the weekend. High pressure is rebuilding over western and parts of central Europe, bringing drier and brighter conditions from France toward the Alps, while the most unsettled weather gradually shifts toward Italy, the Adriatic and the southeastern Mediterranean.

Western Europe trends drier for the weekend

The sharp midweek change described in WeatherToni’s Thursday Europe update is now moving into a calmer phase. France is expected to see strengthening anticyclonic conditions over the weekend, with more widespread dry and sunny weather and temperatures beginning to rise again.

A weak Atlantic disturbance still clips northwestern France on Friday, but current guidance points to a more settled Saturday and Sunday across much of the country.

Germany stays cool at first, with rain returning to the northwest

Germany remains in relatively cool air on Thursday night. Some inland locations may fall to around 5 to 8 °C by Friday morning. During Friday, a new Atlantic disturbance brings cloud and some light rain back toward the North Sea and northwest Germany.

Farther south and east, conditions should remain drier for longer, with afternoon temperatures mostly in the upper teens and low 20s Celsius.

The Alps improve from west to east

Switzerland is already turning drier under increasing high-pressure influence. The trend into Saturday is toward more sunshine and higher afternoon temperatures across the Swiss Plateau.

Austria is slower to improve. Eastern and southeastern areas can still see rain on Friday, while western Austria is already brighter. By Saturday and Sunday, sunshine becomes more widespread and temperatures rise again across much of the country.

Italy keeps the greatest residual instability

Italy remains the main zone of unsettled weather in this part of Europe. After Thursday’s heavier rain and orange alerts, Friday should see a reduction in the overall intensity and coverage of precipitation.

However, showers or thunderstorms can still affect Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Alpine parts of Veneto, the Adriatic regions from Marche toward Molise, the Gargano area and Campania. Strong westerly winds may also affect northern Sardinia and the Strait of Bonifacio.

A classic early-autumn contrast

The weekend setup highlights a typical September contrast: cool nights and morning fog become more likely under clearer skies in western and central Europe, while afternoon sunshine can still push temperatures back into a mild or locally warm range.

At the same time, the Mediterranean and Adriatic remain vulnerable to residual thunderstorms as the departing low-pressure system moves farther southeast.

Travel outlook

For travellers crossing western and central Europe, Saturday currently looks more favourable than the middle of the week, especially from France through Switzerland and western Austria. Routes into eastern Austria, northern Italy and the Adriatic should still be checked against local forecasts because showers and low cloud can remain highly regional.
