Europe at midday: Atlantic cloud brushes the northwest while Italy retains weather alerts

Published: Updated:

Western and central Europe are not under one dominant weather regime this Friday. A weak Atlantic front is brushing north-western France and Germany, central Europe is gradually settling, while Italy still carries residual hydrogeological and thunderstorm alerts after the week’s unsettled spell.

Atlantic cloud reaches France and Germany

The most organised cloud band is moving into north-western France and north-western Germany. Brittany, the Channel coast and parts of northern France are seeing thicker cloud and light rain, while Germany’s North Sea coast and north-west also have locally wet conditions.

The front is weak, so rainfall totals are generally limited and conditions become drier farther south and east.

Central Europe is gradually settling

Switzerland is seeing more sunshine away from persistent cloud near the central and eastern Alps. A north-easterly Bise remains noticeable in western Switzerland.

Austria is slower to improve. Vienna and parts of the east remain cloudier and wetter, while Tirol and the far west have brighter conditions.

Italy still has residual hazards

Italy’s most intense storm phase has eased, but an orange hydrogeological alert remains in force for parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Yellow alerts remain in several other regions for hydraulic, hydrogeological or thunderstorm risks.

This is an important distinction: the atmosphere is less stormy overall, but saturated ground and local runoff can remain a concern after the rain.

Mediterranean warmth remains in France

Southern France stays much warmer than the northwest, with temperatures near the Mediterranean reaching the upper 20s and locally around 30°C. Mistral and Tramontane are still present but weaker than on Thursday.

Friday therefore acts as a transition day between Atlantic influence in the northwest and a gradually strengthening calmer pattern across central Europe.
