Europe’s weather splits this weekend: Atlantic front in the northwest, calmer conditions farther south

Weather conditions across Europe are notably uneven this Saturday, September 12. Northwestern parts of the continent are beginning to feel the influence of an Atlantic front, while areas farther south and across much of the Alps are enjoying a quieter spell.

In Germany, cloud is increasing from the northwest and rain is beginning to edge in from the North Sea. Winds are also strengthening along exposed coastal areas. Farther south, France is under a more settled pattern with widespread sunshine and rising temperatures.

Atlantic influence in the northwest

The most obvious change is occurring around the North Sea. Southwestern winds are picking up, particularly along the German coast and islands, and cloud bands are becoming more organised as the front approaches.

This is not a major storm system, but it marks a clear transition toward more unsettled weather overnight and into Sunday.

France and the Alps stay quieter

France is seeing a mostly sunny and warmer Saturday, with temperatures widely in the mid to upper 20s Celsius and close to 30 degrees near the Mediterranean. The Alpine region is also largely dry, with good visibility and only limited cloud development in many areas.

At high elevations, however, early autumn is increasingly evident. Temperatures around 3000 metres are already close to freezing in places even while valleys remain mild.

Southern Italy remains more unstable

Southern Italy is the main exception to the calmer pattern farther south. Parts of Sicily, Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia remain exposed to showers and local thunderstorms, with yellow weather alerts in force in selected areas.

The result is a highly varied European weather map this evening: frontal cloud and wind in the northwest, sunshine and warmth in France, relatively quiet Alpine weather, and pockets of convective instability around southern Italy.
