Europe weather Saturday: Sunshine expands across the west and Alps, while southern Italy keeps weather alerts
Saturday brings a noticeably quieter weather pattern to much of western and central Europe. France, Switzerland and the western Alps enjoy long sunny spells, while Germany becomes cloudier under weak Atlantic troughs. In southern Italy, official yellow weather alerts remain in place in several regions.
High pressure favours France and Switzerland
France starts the weekend with widespread sunshine after local morning fog in the northwest. Afternoon temperatures reach the mid to upper 20s across many regions and around 30°C near the Mediterranean.
Switzerland also has a bright, dry day after a cool morning. Lowland temperatures generally recover into the low to mid 20s.
The Alps enjoy much better conditions
Austria sees a marked improvement compared with Friday. Sunshine lasts longest in the west, while eastern areas have more cloud and a small chance of a passing shower. Mountain weather is mainly dry, with morning valley fog locally reaching above 1500 metres.
Germany turns more changeable
A weak trough from the Benelux region brings more cloud to northern and central Germany. Local rain is possible, and the North Sea coast may see isolated gusts around 55 km/h later in the day.
Southern Italy remains the exception
Most of Italy is becoming more settled, especially in the centre and north. However, Italy’s Civil Protection Department maintains yellow weather and hydro alerts for Calabria and parts of Basilicata, Puglia and Sicily.
The overall European picture is therefore calmer than earlier in the week, but regional contrasts remain important.
