Europe on Monday: settled in the west, mixed around the Alps, local instability in southern Italy
Monday, September 14, brings a classic early-autumn contrast across Europe.
Across Germany, a temporary ridge of high pressure is moving through. That limits rainfall and allows more dry and brighter spells after a locally foggy start.
France remains the warmest of the six Toni focus areas. Large parts of the country stay dry, with summer-like temperatures in the southwest and Mediterranean regions.
Alpine region remains split
The Alpine region is more complicated.
Switzerland stays generally mild, with a mix of cloud and sunshine and temperatures in the mid-20s in some lowland areas.
Austria has the sharper regional contrast. Western and southern areas see longer dry and sunny periods, while the northern side of the Alps and parts of the east remain cloudier with some rain during the first half of the day.
Italy mostly stable, south still unsettled
Much of northern and central Italy stays dry.
The most unstable weather remains focused on parts of Calabria and Sicily, while isolated showers can also develop over the Alps later in the day.
This is not a widespread severe-weather situation, but it is a reminder that Mediterranean and Alpine weather can vary sharply over relatively short distances.
A calm Monday before new changes
For central Europe, Monday is broadly a transition day.
Germany’s ridge will not last indefinitely, and more active weather is expected to approach from the northwest on Tuesday. For today, however, most of western and central Europe avoids a major storm pattern.
