Catalonia faces a dangerous night as torrential rain risk intensifies

CATALONIA, 16 September 2026. A potentially dangerous overnight rainfall episode is developing across parts of Catalonia, with the regional Civil Protection service maintaining the INUNCAT flood emergency plan on alert. The central concern is not simply the daily rainfall total, but the possibility of very large amounts falling in a short period of time.

More than 90 mm in three hours possible

According to the Generalitat of Catalonia, showers may exceed 40 litres per square metre in 30 minutes in parts of the eastern half of the region. From Wednesday afternoon into the night, accumulations of more than 90 litres per square metre in three hours are possible in Alt Penedès, Baix Llobregat, Baix Penedès, Garraf and Tarragonès.

The thunderstorms are expected to be irregularly distributed. That matters because one town can receive relatively little rain while a neighbouring catchment is hit by a very intense downpour. Civil Protection also warns that the storms may be accompanied by thunder, hail and locally severe weather.

The highest risk is where water concentrates quickly

Short-duration Mediterranean downpours can create dangerous conditions before a broad regional rainfall total looks exceptional. Urban underpasses, low roads, small streams, ravines and normally dry channels can react rapidly when a storm remains over the same area. The five counties singled out for the highest three-hour totals include densely populated and heavily travelled areas south and west of Barcelona and toward Tarragona.

Available AEMET observations from the early evening did not show those extreme forecast totals already occurring across the whole affected zone. That distinction is important: the headline at this stage is an active severe-weather and flood-risk alert, not a claim that widespread catastrophic flooding has already happened.

Travellers should treat flooded roads as impassable

Catalan Civil Protection advises people to follow official forecasts and road information closely. It explicitly warns against crossing streams, torrents, underpasses or flooded areas on foot or by car. Even relatively shallow moving water can make vehicles float or push them off the road.

The risk window extends into the night, when visibility is poorer and the depth of water on a road is harder to judge. Anyone in the affected counties should avoid unnecessary movement through low-lying terrain during intense bursts of rain and follow instructions from local authorities and emergency services.

A live situation rather than a finished event

This is a fast-evolving convective episode. The exact placement of the strongest cells will determine where the most serious impacts occur. For that reason, local radar, official warnings and municipal instructions are more important than assuming the entire Catalan coast will experience the same conditions.

weathertoni.com will treat confirmed impacts separately from forecasts as the night develops. The present confirmed fact is that Catalan authorities have kept INUNCAT on alert because rainfall intensity and short-period accumulations could become dangerous in parts of the region.
