Europe weather through Sunday evening: late-summer warmth, but wind builds in Germany

Update: Saturday, September 19, 2026, 11:16 CEST. The weekend weather pattern across central and western Europe is dominated by late-summer warmth, but there are clear regional contrasts. The Alps remain very mild, northern Germany turns increasingly windy, and southern Italy keeps a thunderstorm risk.

Alpine region: remarkably mild at altitude

Switzerland and Austria are enjoying largely settled weather. In the Swiss lowlands, daytime temperatures reach the mid-20s, with Bern around 24 °C on Saturday and 26 °C on Sunday. In the Swiss Alps, temperatures around 2000 metres are roughly 11 to 15 °C on Saturday and 13 to 18 °C on Sunday.

Austria follows a similar pattern. Vienna reaches around 26 °C, while the eastern Alps see 2000-metre temperatures of about 8 to 14 °C on Saturday, rising to roughly 14 to 18 °C on Sunday. Freezing levels rise above 4000 metres in parts of the Alps.

Germany: wind becomes the main story

Northern Germany is under the influence of a deep low moving from Iceland toward Scandinavia. Coastal gusts reach around 60 km/h on Saturday, locally near 70 km/h. On Sunday the stronger wind spreads inland, with isolated storm-force gusts up to around 85 km/h on the coast. The Brocken may see gusts close to 100 km/h.

France: very warm for late September

France stays warm and mostly settled. Temperatures around 25 °C extend into northern parts of the country on Saturday, while 30 °C is reached near the Mediterranean. On Sunday, 30 °C warmth expands into the southwest and the Rhône valley. Dry ground also keeps wildfire danger elevated in parts of the Mediterranean region.

Italy: unsettled in the centre and south

Northern Italy remains the calmer part of the country. Central and southern regions face scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday. By Sunday, conditions improve across central Italy and Sardinia, while Sicily, Calabria and the Ionian side retain the highest risk of showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Nights remain cooler than the afternoons

Despite the daytime warmth, many inland areas cool noticeably after sunset. Bern falls to around 10 °C, Vienna to roughly 13 °C and Paris to around 15 °C. Mountain valleys can be several degrees cooler.

Bottom line through Sunday evening

The main weather stories are late-season warmth across France and the Alps, increasing wind across Germany and lingering convective weather in southern Italy. There is no single Europe-wide severe-weather event, but the local contrasts are significant.
