Europe Sunday: Wind and rain in the north, late-summer warmth farther south
Europe starts Sunday with a clear north-to-south contrast. Atlantic and Scandinavian low pressure keeps parts of the north unsettled, while higher pressure supports dry and warm conditions across France and much of the Alpine region.
North: cool, wet and windy
Northern Germany starts around 13 to 17°C and reaches only 17 to 21°C in many areas. Rain and showers are widespread, with storm-force gusts possible on exposed North Sea and Baltic coasts. Southern Germany locally reaches 25 to 28°C.
Alps: mild to warm
Switzerland reaches 21 to 24°C in many lowland areas, with a freezing level near 4000 metres. Austria starts at roughly 5°C in higher valleys to 16°C in eastern lowlands and reaches around 17 to 27°C in the afternoon.
France warm, storms in southern Italy
France is widely dry: morning lows include about 16°C in Paris, 13°C in Bordeaux and 12°C in Lyon; highs reach about 24°C, 29°C and 28°C respectively, with 30°C in parts of the south. Italy is drier from the centre northwards, while Sicily, Calabria and Ionian areas retain showers and thunderstorms. Italian highs are generally 24 to 26°C, locally 28°C. The southern instability gradually eases in the evening.
