Europe weather today: Cool and unsettled north, much warmer southwest
Europe starts Thursday, 24 September 2026, with a pronounced temperature contrast. Cooler air affects northern and parts of central Europe, while southwestern Europe remains much warmer under more settled conditions.
Western and southwestern Europe: France is largely dry and sunny after local morning fog or low cloud. Afternoon temperatures reach 21 to 25°C in the north and 26 to 31°C across many other areas, with local 32 to 34°C values in southwestern France. Madrid is forecast around 30°C and Lisbon around 29°C.
Central Europe: Germany turns cooler as a weak cold front moves through, bringing rain to northern areas and gusty northwesterly winds. Berlin is around 14°C, Frankfurt about 18°C and Prague near 14°C. Vienna is around 18°C with rain in the broader region.
Alpine region: Switzerland and western Austria begin fairly bright in many places, but cloud increases during the day. At higher elevations the west to northwesterly wind strengthens. Valley temperatures are commonly in the upper teens to low twenties.
Italy and the central Mediterranean: Northern Italy is often drier with breaks in the cloud, while parts of central and southern Italy are more unstable with showers or thunderstorms. Rome is around 27°C, Milan near 25°C.
Northern Europe: Scandinavia remains much cooler, with highs near 15°C in Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki. Rain affects parts of Finland, while cloud is widespread elsewhere. The UK is mostly dry and bright in the south and east, with rain and stronger winds spreading into the northwest.
Travellers crossing Europe today should therefore prepare for very different conditions: summer-like warmth in the southwest, cooler and windier weather in central and northern areas, and more unsettled conditions around parts of the central Mediterranean.
