Europe weather Wednesday: late warmth in central Europe, severe rain risk in southern France
Wednesday brings another warm late-September day to large parts of central Europe. Switzerland reaches around 25 to 26 °C in many northern and western lowland areas, Germany climbs to 28-29 °C in parts of the west and southwest, and Austria peaks near 25 °C.
The morning is much cooler in inland and alpine regions. Austria starts between roughly 4 and 15 °C, while southern Germany drops into single digits in some locations. In Switzerland, many northern lowland sites start close to 11 °C, with warmer readings south of the Alps.
Italy remains largely stable in the available official forecasts. Rome is around 17-27 °C, sample locations in Veneto reach about 26 °C and inland Abruzzo starts near 11 °C before rising to around 24 °C. Winds are generally light to moderate.
The major exception is southern France, where a marked Mediterranean episode is underway. Météo-France warns of intense thunderstorms and flooding risk across parts of the Cévennes, Gard, Hérault, Ardèche and Lozère. Rain rates on the Cévennes relief may reach 50-80 mm in one hour, with event totals locally up to 250-350 mm.
Farther north and east, no comparable widespread severe-weather setup is indicated for daytime Wednesday. Local fog can reduce visibility in sheltered valleys and river basins during the morning, followed by good travel conditions across many central regions.
