Europe splits on Tuesday: mild and calm in the centre, heavier rain builds in the western Mediterranean

Europe enters Tuesday with a sharp weather divide. Much of central Europe remains under relatively calm and mild autumn conditions, while the western Mediterranean and parts of western France turn more unsettled. Northern Germany also stays cloudier, with some light rain possible.

Across Germany, Tuesday brings highs of about 17 to 24°C. The centre and south become mostly bright after local morning fog, while the north is cloudier and locally damp. Austria is even milder: many valleys and lowlands reach roughly 20 to 25°C after fog lifts, with only isolated afternoon showers in the far west. In the Austrian mountains, temperatures remain unusually high, around 10°C at 2,000 metres and about 2°C at 3,000 metres.

Western Mediterranean is the wetter zone

France shows the strongest contrast. Météo-France expects persistent rain on eastern Corsica and increasingly frequent rain over the Languedoc through Tuesday, becoming heavier toward the evening. At the same time, large parts of France can still reach 25 to 28°C. Showers also move in from the Atlantic later in the day.

Italy remains mixed rather than uniformly unsettled. Northern areas are often dry with highs around 24 to 25°C, while some central regions face local afternoon showers. Sardinia is one of the warmest areas, with temperatures locally close to 29°C. In Switzerland, lowland areas are generally quieter after morning fog, while southern Alpine valleys remain cooler and somewhat more changeable.

Europe weather at a glance

  • Central Europe: mostly calm and mild after morning fog, especially Austria and southern Germany.
  • France: 25-28°C in many regions, but increasing rain in Languedoc and thunderstorms around Corsica.
  • Italy: mostly stable in the north and Sardinia, more local showers in parts of central Italy.
  • Northern Germany: cloudier with some light rain; Alpine regions mostly mild through Tuesday.

What changes by Tuesday evening?

The most important shift is in France, where Mediterranean rain becomes more organised toward Tuesday evening and the Atlantic west also turns showery. Central Europe remains comparatively quiet through the day. Travellers crossing the Alps should expect local morning fog in valleys but generally good visibility later, except in the more changeable western and southern Alpine sectors.

By Tuesday evening, the next broader transition is already approaching: a more widespread change with lower temperatures is expected to develop from Wednesday into Thursday across parts of western and central Europe.
