Europe splits on Wednesday: Mediterranean storms intensify while Central Europe stays unusually mild

Europe’s weather pattern becomes much more divided overnight into Wednesday. The most active weather develops around southern France and the western Mediterranean, while large parts of central Europe remain under very mild air for one more day. Morning temperatures range widely: roughly 5 to 14°C across Germany, 5 to 13°C across most of Austria with colder Alpine valleys, around 12°C north of the Swiss Alps, and 17 to 20°C near the French Mediterranean coast.

Germany starts Wednesday with local fog, then turns bright across many central and southern areas. Highs reach about 20 to 26°C there, while northern regions are cooler at roughly 17 to 23°C. By late afternoon and evening, cloud and rain increase in the west and northwest as the next front approaches.

Alpine region: warm, windy and increasingly divided

Austria enjoys another unusually warm day with 18 to 26°C and long sunny spells. A föhn-like southerly flow strengthens over the mountains. Switzerland shows a stronger north-south contrast: the northern side of the Alps can reach around 26°C under föhn influence, while rain builds on the southern Alpine side and in parts of the western Alps. The freezing level remains high, around 3000 to 3500 metres.

France has the most disruptive weather. Heavy, locally intense thunderstorms affect the Languedoc and Provence before spreading toward the Côte d’Azur and Corsica. Paris turns wet and much cooler at around 17°C in the afternoon, while the far northeast can still briefly reach 23 to 26°C. Italy remains mixed: the north-west and upper Tyrrhenian side become increasingly showery and thundery, while parts of central and southern Italy stay warmer in the mid-20s.

Europe at a glance

  • Central Europe: very mild for October, commonly 18–26°C across Austria, southern Germany and parts of Switzerland.
  • Germany: local morning fog, then sunshine; rain reaches the west and northwest later.
  • France: widespread rain and thunderstorms, locally severe in the Mediterranean south-east.
  • Italy: showers and storms increase in the north-west and parts of the Tyrrhenian side; warmer and quieter intervals remain farther south.

By Wednesday evening the change is clearly underway

The most useful dividing line is west versus east. Western Europe is becoming increasingly unsettled, while eastern parts of central Europe hold on to warmth and dry weather for longer. Travellers should expect the highest weather impact in southern France and later in western Germany and the north-western Alpine region.
