Europe’s weekend weather: rain and wind in central Europe, Alpine snow lowers on Sunday

Europe enters the weekend with a clear west-to-east contrast. Atlantic fronts are moving through France, Germany and the northern side of the Alps, bringing rain, gusty winds and cooler mountain conditions. Farther south, much of the western Mediterranean is milder, but southern Italy remains the main severe-weather focus on Saturday.

Saturday: wet from France to Germany and the northern Alps

In France, early temperatures are mostly 9 to 12°C across the northern half and central-eastern regions, and 11 to 16°C farther south. Afternoon highs reach 16 to 22°C, rising to 20 to 25°C around the Mediterranean. A weakening rain band stretches from the southwest toward the central-east, while the Mediterranean coast sees longer sunny spells.

Germany is cloudier and cooler. Most lowlands start near 10 to 13°C and reach around 12 to 18°C in the afternoon. Rain and showers affect many northern, western and southern areas, while eastern Germany gets some of the better dry intervals. Coastal areas are gusty and exposed uplands can see storm-force gusts.

Across Switzerland and Austria, the north side of the Alps is frequently wet. Swiss lowlands north of the Alps reach about 15 to 16°C, while southern Switzerland can approach 19°C. Austria ranges from roughly 10°C in persistent rain to around 20°C in the east. Saturday snow levels in the Alps are generally high, near 2200 to 2500 metres, with Austria around 2400 metres.

Southern Italy: the weekend’s main severe-weather concern

Italy has the sharpest regional contrast. Northern regions are comparatively stable, with many valleys and plains starting around 7 to 14°C and reaching 17 to 22°C. In the south, thunderstorms remain capable of producing intense downpours, strong gusts, local hail and frequent lightning. Italy’s Civil Protection has orange alerts for Saturday in Sicily and parts of Calabria, Puglia and Campania.

Sunday: cooler north of the Alps, brighter in the west

Sunday morning is cooler across central Europe. Germany commonly falls to 7 to 10°C in lowlands, while parts of Switzerland drop to 5 to 7°C. Afternoon highs are mostly 12 to 17°C in Germany, around 15 to 16°C north and west of the Swiss Alps and up to 19°C in southern Switzerland. Austria reaches 11 to about 20°C, warmest in the east.

The western Alps improve during the day, especially western Switzerland and the French Alps. However, residual showers along the northern Swiss Alps can bring the snow level down to around 1800 to 2000 metres. In Austria the snow level is forecast to fall to roughly 1600 to 2200 metres, with showers most likely in Upper Austria, Salzburg, Carinthia and Styria.

France is generally calmer on Sunday, although cloud increases in the west and a new front approaches western Brittany later in the day. Germany remains largely cloudy with rain or showers in many regions. Southern Italy improves gradually, but isolated showers can persist around the southern Apennines and nearby regions.

Europe at a glance

  • Saturday: France 16–22°C widely, Germany 12–18°C, Austria roughly 10–20°C and Switzerland 15–19°C depending on region.
  • Saturday Alpine snow level: generally around 2200–2500 m, with rain below that level.
  • Sunday: Germany turns cooler at 12–17°C; Switzerland and Austria stay regionally milder but remain changeable.
  • Sunday Alpine snow level falls to about 1800–2000 m on the northern Swiss Alps and 1600–2200 m in Austria.
  • Southern Italy: official orange alerts on Saturday in Sicily and parts of Calabria, Puglia and Campania.

Best weather windows through Sunday evening

The most reliable dry weather is found near the Mediterranean coast of France, parts of northern Italy and south of the Swiss Alps. Western Switzerland and the French Alps improve notably on Sunday. The least favourable conditions for mountain plans are on the northern and eastern Alps, where lower snow levels, cloud and wind can quickly turn autumn hiking conditions into early-winter terrain.
