Europe turns calmer on Monday: fog and sunshine in the Alps, showers linger in the north and south

Published:

Europe is moving into a quieter weather pattern, but the transition is uneven. On Sunday, northern Germany remains under cool maritime air with frequent showers, gusty winds and a few short thunderstorms. Farther south, Switzerland is mostly dry, Austria sees a mix of sun, fog and local showers, while southern Italy still has the highest thunderstorm risk.

France is split between cloudier conditions in the north and west and brighter weather in the south-east. The western Mediterranean is generally calmer, although local winds remain noticeable. Across the Alps, fresh snow from the previous days remains visible at higher elevations, but widespread new snowfall is not expected as high pressure strengthens.

Sunday: unsettled north, calmer central Alps

Germany sees the most active weather in the north, with North Sea showers and local thunderstorms. Gusts around 55 km/h are common in exposed northern areas, with stronger gusts near the coast early in the day. Switzerland is mostly dry with afternoon temperatures near 15 to 16°C north of the Alps and close to 20°C in the south.

Austria ranges from around 11 to 17°C in many regions, locally near 20°C in the east and south-east. Rain or showers are most likely from Vorarlberg through Upper Austria toward Carinthia, with snowflakes possible in the Alps roughly between 1600 and 2200 metres where precipitation persists. In Italy, the north is comparatively stable while showers and thunderstorms continue across parts of the south, especially Puglia.

Monday: high pressure brings a broader improvement

Monday is quieter across much of western and central Europe. Germany becomes mostly dry with sunny intervals after morning fog, although a few showers can linger in the east and north-east. Switzerland turns sunny in the west, Valais and south, while low cloud or fog may delay sunshine north of the Alps.

Western Austria, especially Tyrol and Vorarlberg, gets plenty of sunshine after early fog. Farther east, clouds and a few isolated showers remain possible. France is calm and bright across roughly three quarters of the country, with weak Atlantic rain mainly affecting the north-west. Italy also improves, with mostly dry weather in the north and centre and only isolated showers left in the south.

Best travel window

Monday is the better travel and outdoor day across much of the Alps, France and Germany. Morning fog can reduce visibility in valleys and lowlands, especially in Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany. In northern Germany and southern Italy, conditions improve more gradually, so local showers should still be considered when planning outdoor activities.
