A cold front is driving a sharp weather change across parts of Central Europe on Wednesday, September 16. Showers and thunderstorms are spreading through Germany and the Alpine region, northern Italy becomes more unsettled later in the day, and the Atlantic hurricane basin currently has no active tropical cyclone.
Central Europe is moving away from the unusually warm conditions seen earlier in the week. A cold front is crossing Germany from northwest to southeast and is also reaching the Alpine region, bringing a growing risk of showers, thunderstorms and locally strong wind gusts.
Behind the front, cooler maritime air is spreading into Germany. In the northern Alps, temperatures are also falling sharply at elevation, with snow becoming possible on the highest summits overnight into Thursday.
Northern Italy becomes wetter
Italy’s national Civil Protection forecast calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms across several northern regions from Wednesday afternoon. The weather becomes more unsettled on Thursday, especially in the North and Northeast, while much of southern Italy remains less affected.
France is also seeing a significant temperature drop after Tuesday’s heat. A weak front brings scattered rain and isolated thunder, while southeastern France remains much warmer for another day.
No active Atlantic tropical cyclone
The U.S. National Hurricane Center reported no active tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin in its latest overnight update. In the eastern Pacific, the former Tropical Depression Fifteen-E has dissipated and the final advisory has been issued.
In the United States, the Weather Prediction Center highlights a moderate excessive-rainfall risk over parts of northeastern Kansas into northwestern Missouri. This is a separate hazard from the European frontal system but remains one of the more significant weather risks in the international outlook.
The broader picture is therefore highly regional: a cooler frontal transition across Central Europe, unsettled weather spreading into northern Italy, lingering warmth around parts of the Mediterranean and no active Atlantic cyclone at the time of this update.
