Sunday afternoon into Monday brings a strong north-to-south contrast across western and central Europe. Cooler Atlantic and northern air spreads across Germany and Austria, while high pressure holds on across France, Switzerland and much of Italy.
Germany and northern central Europe
Northern Germany stays windy and showery. Monday morning temperatures are mostly 7 to 15°C across Germany, with 13 to 15°C on exposed coasts. Afternoon highs are generally 16 to 20°C, locally 23°C in the south-west. Storm-force gusts remain possible on exposed North Sea and Baltic coasts.
Alpine region
Austria cools strongly behind a cold front: Monday starts at 4 to 13°C and reaches only 13 to 21°C. Gusts around 80 km/h are possible near the eastern Alpine edge in the morning. Switzerland also turns cooler; Zurich falls from about 24°C on Sunday to around 20°C on Monday, while Engelberg reaches about 18°C.
France stays warm
France remains widely dry and sunny. Monday morning ranges from about 9°C in Lille to 15°C in Lyon. Afternoon highs range from about 22°C in Lille and 24°C in Paris to 27°C in Lyon and 31°C in Bordeaux.
Italy mostly settles down
Thunderstorm activity over southern Italy eases through Sunday night. Monday is more anticyclonic across most of the country, although eastern Sicily and Ionian areas remain more exposed to cooler northerly flow. Local examples range from 4 to 15°C in an Alpine valley to 17 to 27°C in inland Basilicata.
By Monday evening, the main European divide is clear: cooler and windier in the north and north-east, much warmer and drier in France and the western Mediterranean.
