Switzerland is enjoying another warm and mostly sunny late-summer day on Sunday. Many areas stay dry, sunshine is widespread and temperatures rise well into the upper 20s. In western parts of the country, around 30°C is possible.
Although meteorological autumn has already started, the weather across Switzerland still feels very summery. After some local early morning mist or haze, sunshine becomes dominant in many regions and conditions remain dry for most of the day.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach around 26 to 29°C in many lowland areas, with western Switzerland locally close to 30°C. It stays a little cooler in elevated terrain and parts of eastern Switzerland, but overall the air mass remains very mild for early September.
Very mild conditions in the Alps
The Alps also continue to see unusually warm conditions. This makes for a pleasant day outdoors, with generally good visibility and only limited convective activity. Hikers should still be aware of the strong sun and warm temperatures, especially during the afternoon.
More changeable weather ahead
The warm pattern is likely to continue into the start of the new week. However, the atmosphere is expected to become gradually less stable. That means local showers or thunderstorms may return, particularly over the mountains, before a more noticeable cool-down and changeable spell arrives around the middle of the week.
