Europe’s Saturday divide: a warm Rhine and Alps, cloudier northern Germany

Published:

Forecast window: Friday afternoon, 25 September, to Saturday evening, 26 September 2026. This regional overview focuses on France, Germany, Austria and Italy. It is not a single forecast for every European country.

Friday afternoon: the contrast is already visible

Much of France remains warm and sunny, although showers are possible around Corsica and the southern French Alps. In Italy, the more unsettled conditions are concentrated in southern areas. Across Germany and Austria, strengthening high pressure increasingly favours settled weather.

Saturday: a warm core, but not summer temperatures everywhere

The German Weather Service expects 22–26 °C across much of central and southern Germany after local fog clears. Parts of the Upper Rhine may reach around 30 °C. Northern Germany stays cooler at 17–21 °C, with passing cloud and some rain; coastal areas become brighter again during the day.

Austria also warms up, with the highest Saturday temperatures expected in the west. Its mountain forecast is particularly striking: at 2,000 metres, the ORF bulletin ranges from about 7 °C on the Rax to 16 °C in the Ötztal Alps. Those figures describe different mountain regions, not a universal temperature at that altitude.

France and Italy need a regional reading

Low cloud delays the sunshine in parts of western and southeastern France on Saturday, with brighter weather returning to many areas later. Northern and central Italy are generally sunnier, while residual showers remain possible around Salento, Calabria and Sicily. Moderate northerly winds persist across southern Italy and the islands.

What matters for weekend plans

The practical distinction is between a cool or locally foggy start and the warmer afternoon, and between the generally sunnier interior and the remaining cloud or shower zones. A headline temperature near 30 °C should not be applied to northern Germany or to high mountain locations. Local fog clearance and the precise track of a southern Italian shower remain more uncertain than the broad regional pattern. This outlook stops on Saturday evening and does not present later warming as an established Saturday outcome.
