Europe is entering Tuesday with a clear contrast in its weather pattern. Central Europe is still under the influence of relatively calm autumn conditions, with local morning fog followed by sunshine and unusually mild afternoon temperatures. At the same time, the western Mediterranean remains much more unsettled.
Germany shows the classic divide between north and south: the south and centre turn brighter after local fog, while the north stays cloudier with some light rain near the coasts. Austria is one of the best-performing countries today, with widespread sunshine, highs of roughly 18 to 25°C and only a small late-day shower risk in the far west. Switzerland also improves after local fog, with many lowland areas turning pleasantly mild through the afternoon.
The Mediterranean side is more active
France carries the main headline today. Météo-France has orange alerts for rain and thunderstorms in Gard and Hérault, while eastern Corsica also remains exposed to thundery showers. Large parts of France away from the Mediterranean still stay very mild, with many areas reaching 25 to 28°C. Italy is less extreme overall, but it is not fully settled either: northern areas are often more stable, while parts of central Tyrrhenian Italy see more clouds and local showers.
This means travel conditions are generally favourable across much of central Europe, but anyone moving through southern France or sections of the western Mediterranean should expect slower weather, heavier bursts of rain and more rapidly changing conditions.
Best and worst zones today
The best outdoor conditions are expected across Austria, much of southern Germany and many Swiss lowland areas once early fog has cleared. The most delicate zone remains the Mediterranean side of France, followed by some more changeable parts of central Italy. Overall, Europe still leans mild today, but the calm pattern is starting to show cracks from the southwest.
