Weather conditions are easing across parts of Central Europe on Thursday, September 10, 2026, as high pressure builds behind Wednesday’s cold front. Germany and much of Switzerland are turning drier, while the highest-impact weather shifts toward Italy, the southern Alps and parts of the Mediterranean.
High pressure returns behind the cold front
The broad air-mass change described in Wednesday’s WeatherToni Europe update is now moving into its next phase. Cooler maritime air has spread across Germany and the northern Alps, and pressure is rising from the west and north.
In Germany, the main story is weather improvement rather than further severe weather. Most locations are forecast to stay between about 17 and 23 °C, with cloudier conditions in the north and east and brighter spells more likely in western and southwestern regions. A few stronger wind gusts can still affect the North Sea and Baltic coasts early in the day.
Switzerland turns drier, but Alpine cloud lingers
Across the Swiss Plateau, a northeasterly Bise is bringing drier air and increasing amounts of sunshine. Temperatures are generally around 20 °C. The central and eastern Alps remain cloudier, and a little residual precipitation is still possible in parts of northern and central Graubünden.
South of the Alps, conditions are more changeable because moisture remains wrapped around a low-pressure system over the Ligurian Sea.
Austria remains split between improving weather and southern rain
Austria shows a clear regional divide. Western and northern areas gradually see more breaks in the cloud, while southern and southeastern parts remain under the influence of the developing Mediterranean low. Rain can persist from Carinthia and Styria toward Burgenland, with national daytime highs mostly between 17 and 23 °C.
Italy has the most significant official alert situation
The most important severe-weather zone in this part of Europe is now Italy. The Italian Civil Protection Department has issued orange alerts for all of Tuscany and for broad areas of Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Marche.
Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected across the northeast and central regions. National guidance indicates locally very high rainfall totals are possible in parts of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Ferrara plain. Thunderstorms may also bring strong wind gusts and frequent lightning.
France is mostly calmer, except Corsica and the southeast
Most of France is enjoying a drier and brighter Thursday, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal levels. However, Corsica and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur remain more unstable. Thunderstorms and locally heavy showers may develop over Corsica and the southern Alpine region, while Mistral and Tramontane gusts can still reach around 50 to 70 km/h locally.
Travel conditions can change sharply across short distances
For travellers, the key feature is the strong contrast across the region. A journey from Germany or Switzerland toward northern and central Italy can move from cool, relatively calm weather into persistent rain and thunderstorms within a few hours.
Anyone travelling through the Alps, northeastern Italy or Tuscany should check the latest national and regional warnings before departure. The broad European pattern is now clear: the cold front is losing influence north of the Alps, while the associated unsettled weather is concentrating farther south and east.
