Late-summer warmth strengthens across central and western Europe on Sunday

Published:

Saturday evening: A broad high-pressure pattern keeps much of central and southern Europe dry. Switzerland and Austria end the day mostly clear, Italy is largely settled, while northern Germany carries more cloud associated with a weak front.

Overnight: Clear skies allow strong cooling in Alpine valleys and parts of central Europe. Local fog develops in valleys, river basins and low-lying areas. Austria may locally see frost, while Mediterranean coasts remain much milder.

Sunday morning: Fog clears in most places and sunshine becomes widespread from Switzerland and Austria into northern Italy. Germany remains more mixed in the north, while France quickly warms under mostly dry conditions.

Sunday afternoon: France becomes the heat standout, with 30–32°C widely from the southwest toward the Grand Est and isolated values near 34°C. Switzerland reaches roughly 26–28°C in parts of the lowlands, Austria 19–26°C, and Rome around 28°C. Northern Germany is cooler, generally around 16–21°C near the coasts and low 20s farther south and west.

Alpine conditions: The Alps are not broadly snow-covered. Mid-elevation slopes remain green or autumnal, while snow is mainly confined to high peaks, glaciers and a few locations affected by earlier snowfall. In Austria, temperatures near 2000 metres reach about 10–16°C on Sunday.
