Friday’s weather across western and central Europe is split between a weak Atlantic disturbance in the northwest and lingering instability around the Alps and Italy. France and Germany show the clearest west-to-east contrast, while Italy still has official weather-related alerts in place.
A weak Atlantic front clips France and Germany
North-western France is the main area where Atlantic cloud and light rain are pushing inland this morning. Brittany and areas towards the Belgian border are cloudier and locally wet, while much of central and southern France remains dry.
A similar pattern reaches Germany. The northwest is cloudier with some light rain, while southern Germany has better chances of brighter spells. Temperatures are generally moderate rather than hot.
Switzerland is mostly quieter
Much of Switzerland is dry, with the sun strongest in the west. Residual moisture is still being pushed against the central and eastern Alps, where cloud can be more persistent. Southern Switzerland and the Engadin remain a little more variable, with isolated showers possible.
The Bise is the main wind feature in western Switzerland and can be noticeable around exposed areas and lakes.
Austria stays cloudier and wetter
Austria is not enjoying the same degree of sunshine. Much of the country remains cloudy with periods of rain, although Vorarlberg in the far west is drier and sees some brighter intervals.
Temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper teens, locally just above 20°C where sunshine develops.
Italy still has residual hazards
Italy’s stormiest phase is easing, but the country is not completely settled. An orange hydrogeological alert remains in place for parts of Friuli Venezia Giulia, while scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast from the northeast to parts of the Adriatic side and southern regions.
Strong westerly winds also affect northern Sardinia and the Strait of Bonifacio, with rough seas in that area.
A transition day rather than a continent-wide pattern
Friday is therefore not defined by one dominant weather regime across Europe. The northwest is being brushed by an Atlantic disturbance, central areas are temporarily quieter, and the Mediterranean still carries some of the week’s remaining instability.
